Guide to Festivals in Europe

When you think of Festivals in Europe what´s the first event that springs to mind? When I considered this question my first thoughts were the beer festival (Oktoberfest) in Munich and the bullrunning in Pamplona. These are two massive events attracting visitors from all over the globe but this might not be everyone’s idea of a festival.

For many young (and not so young) people a festival refers almost exclusively to the multitude of enormous music festivals taking place across the continent. Older, or dare I say maturer, festival goers might perceive of the question in terms of classical music festivals together with theatre, opera, jazz, and film events. As the scope of my concept of festivals in Europe expands I realise that the countless sporting events taking place throughout Europe also deserve to be included.

Where does it end? Basically any regular meeting of a large number of people to celebrate an event can be included in our definition of a festival. Now that that’s sorted out let’s begin our journey as we travel around Europe in search of festivals.
